The Carvajal Mansion

Why is it important

In this construction we can appreciate the architecture of the early XIII century; it is one of the few architectonic samples of Arab influence which we can appreciate on its polilobular arches in Campeche.

How to get there

It is located on Calle 10 between 51 and 53, in the Historical Center of Campeche City.

History

Its early construction dated on the XIII century. An addition to the original construction was held in the early XIX century. The house was originally the residence of a wealthy land owner, Fernando Carvajal Estrada and his wife, Doña María Lavalle de Carvajal.

They owned the greatest hacienda in the peninsula, the Guayamon. The wrought iron grille of the doors and windows have the initials of the name of the owner’s father, Mr. Fernando Carvajal Iturralde. In the middle years of the present century the house was sold and it completed commercial functions. Through the years it has harbored hotels, dancing halls, government's offices. And at the moment it is occupied by the offices of the state’s DIF (Family’s Integral Development).

Description

It is a two level building; the first level has on its facade great windows which en in straight frontons and striped pilasters. The second level has similar windows but they also have balconies with denticles.

We can appreciate in all the house wrought iron grilles, and the forge of the windows of the main facade, contains three capital letters F, C and I. In the interior there is a central patio defined by arcade; this abuilding is one of the few architectural samples in Campeche with polilobular arches of Arab influence sustained by columns of the Tuscan order.

The back patio presents arcades of the same type only on one of its sides, in front of it there is a simple thatched top. A third patio exists in the right wing of the building with the same characteristics. Another unique element of this building is the elliptic stairway made out of a single Carrara marble stone. The land’s size is about 900m2 and the constructed area in its two levels is approximately 1000 m2.
